what is God breaking?
As my understanding of discipleship has developed over the years, I’ve realized that the process is more than learning to follow Jesus. As important as that is, Jesus not only taught his disciples how to live, but he taught them to trust him. Discipleship is learning to follow and trust Jesus.
But lately I’ve also been thinking that this isn’t complete either. It’s possible to believe all the right things and even act in the right ways and still be an unhealthy human being. Learning to trust and follow Jesus also means that I am am crucifying my flesh and dying to self. And that hurts.
Discipleship involves God’s word, the Holy Spirit, and seasons of brokenness. Romans 8:13 …
For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
The breaking process has been an essential part of my own discipleship, and the more I disciple others the more I see that God breaks them as well. I’m learning to cooperate with that process in my own life and to facilitate the dying process in others. Though it hurts, I’ve learned that the other side of brokenness is always a better place to be. Romans 8:18 …
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us.
