Jesus on dvd

Movie Night

Over the past two Friday nights we showed a small group of about 15 the film ‘The Gospel of John.’ Observations the first night were that Jesus appeared so much more human. The movie, following the words of the Gospel of John from the Good News Bible, portrays Jesus as angry, sad, happy, and frustrated. Others commented how Jesus’ claims could appear arrogant and unbelievable. The second night, which focused on the final week of Jesus’ life, brought out comments about Pilot and Judas. How much did they understand about what they were doing? How much free will did they have in the process?

Both evenings ended with opportunities to talk about who Jesus really is, to explain how his death and resurrection dealt with the problem of sin, and to invite people to personally trust Christ.

I was impressed by the genuineness and authenticity of the discussion. I’m convinced people are eager for more of God in their lives and more understanding of spiritual things.

Thanks and God Bless

I love the Visual Bible - Matthew–for the same reason. Actually, I’ve never seen the thing in its entirety, but have seen many bits of it in several videos put together for kids. I have a favorite part in the one called “The Greatest Storyteller”. Jesus has just healed a leper and, in his enthusiasm in seeing that he has been healed, the man hugs Jesus with just enough force to knock them both to the ground, where they both continue hugging and laughing for joy. Just a straight read of the story doesn’t necessarily evoke that image, but it definitely works!

I’ve never seen the Matthew one, but I’ve heard its good. One of my favorites is Jesus of Nazareth, though its about 6 hours. Every year they show it through Holy Week on public television here in Cyprus. It’s not based on scripture word for word, but adds some interesting insight. My favorite scene is when Jesus goes to a party at Levi’s house. He uses that occasion to tell the story of the Prodigal Son while the other disciples watch through the window from outside not wanting to enter the home of a tax collector.

We’ve also used The Passion here.

I’d love to see the scene of the leper knocking Jesus to the ground!
