That’s the title of a series of lectures (and eventually a book) given by Dietrich Bonhoeffer at the University of Berlin in 1933 – early in his theological development. For Bonhoeffer, the primary question the Church needs to wrestle with is not ‘How?’ but ‘Who?’ When the how questions become central to our ministry, we end up off course.
After finishing a series focused on the Fruit of the Spirit, at the Nicosia International Church we’re going to focus our attention on the person and work of Christ. It was exciting to prepare the schedule for our teaching team. Here’s where we’re headed beginning 18 March and going through Easter.
- John 1:1-3 – The Deity of Christ
- John 1:4-13 – The Mission of Christ
- John 1:14-18 – The Gift of Christ
- Mark 15:1-39 – The Passion of Christ
- Mark 16:1-8 – The Resurrection of Christ
And then we start to prepare for Pentecost! Exciting days ahead …
If you’re astute and doing the math, you’ve noticed that this series takes us a week later than the Western Eastern on 8 April. That’s because in Cyprus we follow the eastern church calendar and will celebrate the resurrection a week later than most of those in America and Western Europe.
I enjoy the tiny Dominican following behind Jesus on his knees!
Yeah … reminds me of the little guy who always accompanies St. George.
But the symbolism of the size of Christ in comparison to the servant of Christ is telling. Following a giant Christ on one’s knees is a fitting picture of discipleship.
‘Following a giant Christ on one’s knees is a fitting picture of discipleship,’ indeed!
